Are you considering applying for Dutch citizenship but do not want to give up your Hungarian citizenship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many Hungarians living in the Netherlands, understanding how dual citizenship works is an important issue, as after five years of residence the possibility of applying for naturalisation becomes available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dutch regulations are relatively strict: as a general rule, when applying for Dutch citizenship, you must declare your intention to renounce your existing citizenship. However, there are important exceptions, for example if you are married to or in a registered partnership with a Dutch citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happens if you later reacquire your original citizenship?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
If, after naturalisation, you later decide to reacquire your original citizenship, the Dutch authorities may automatically terminate your Dutch citizenship unless certain strict conditions are met, such as conditions relating to your spouse’s citizenship or your place of birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Few people are aware of this rule, which makes it particularly important to obtain the necessary information before applying for Dutch citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
